Occupational safety 2025: More protection, less work with the right training

Rules upon rules: Bureaucracy makes occupational health and safety more difficult

Occupational health and safety is important – no question about it. After all, it’s about the health and safety of your team. But anyone who is responsible for this in the company knows that with the obligation comes a lot of paperwork.

Creating risk assessments, organizing instructions, documenting evidence – and all of this regularly and without gaps. Small and medium-sized companies in particular often feel left alone with this.

Who is going to pay for it?

More and more companies are complaining about the growing bureaucracy involved in occupational health and safety. And quite rightly so. According to a position paper published by the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA), companies have to comply with around 10,000 individual occupational health and safety requirements. This involves a great deal of training – small companies in particular suffer from the high costs incurred by external training providers.

A lot of effort, little benefit?

The criticism is clear; in addition to the high training costs, companies complain:

  • Too many forms
  • too much time
  • Too little support for practical implementation

Politicians are now responding: the current coalition agreement plans initial steps for 2025 to reduce bureaucracy in occupational health and safety.

Instead of rigid obligations to provide evidence, the aim is to focus more on sanctions for genuine breaches in future. At the same time, digital solutions and modern technologies should reduce the effort involved.

Artificial intelligence: initial approaches for more efficient occupational safety

Artificial intelligence (AI) can already support occupational health and safety measures today, but should be used with caution due to a lack of legal certainty. AI can help you, for example, with the creation of safety plans or the analysis of hazards. Risks can be assessed automatically or suggestions for measures can be generated.

However, despite these digital aids, the bureaucratic burden remains high for many companies. AI can provide support – but it currently replaces neither the legal obligations nor the responsibility that lies with companies.
