Mobile Time tracking in road construction – faster, cheaper, more accurate

More than ten years ago, KEMNA BAU Andreae GmbH & Co. KG introduced the digital Time tracking on construction sites, making it one of the pioneers among road construction companies.

Following the switch from Blackberrys to smartphones and tablets and a successful test phase, KEMNA had 123onsite quickly introduced the system throughout the company. Around one hundred employees working on the road construction sites record the working hours of almost for almost six hundred industrial colleagues. For the remaining 250 employees in the mixing plants and quarries, the hours are recorded on a stationary PC, with all data flowing together at the KEMNA headquarters in Pinneberg.

Always based on the current legal regulations

For Mirko Wiese, Head of Human Resources at KEMNA, the digital Time trackingWe have stored average wages so that those who have recorded the exact hours during the day can see the results of their construction site in the evening.” The Time tracking for the more than four hundred employees is also implemented in accordance with the requirements of the new Minimum Wage Act. “We are currently in the process of 123onsite developing further work simplifications. This includes, for example, the option of scanning delivery bills using a barcode or QR code so that we always know how much asphalt of which type has been delivered to which construction site “, says Mirko Wiese.

No seamless mobile phone reception in the countryside? Not an issue for 123onsite

KEMNA roadworks are often located in rural areas. Here, network coverage sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. With 123onsite however, the data recorded offline is automatically transferred to the HR department and the site manager as soon as reception is restored. “Later, the program shows us whether there are any overlaps in the recording, e.g. whether two crew leaders have inadvertently entered hours for the same employee on different construction sites,” explains the HR manager.

Lots of useful information for the HR department

And the software has even more up its sleeve that benefits the HR department: it can now create the master data for employees itself, release construction site teams for other branches and set up small and large groups for an employee regardless of the location of the KEMNA branch and the current construction site. “What works so simply is the result of complex programming,” explains Wiese, “as various working time models, night allowance models etc. for the fifty or so locations are stored here, all of which have to be taken into account.” In the past, these were all activities that could only be carried out in cooperation with the IT department; today, many things are automated or can be controlled by employees in the HR department.

Optimally manage construction equipment and assign cost centers

“Even though such a changeover involves major risks, we were able to convince all employees of the benefits and advantages of the new system. The urge to play with the new smartphones and tablets is certainly a factor that should not be underestimated,” says Mirko Wiese with a laugh, pointing to his monitor on which he can see the locations of the individual columns live. “For decentralized, medium-sized construction companies like KEMNA, a flexible system like 123onsite makes work much easier and saves a lot of time and money.”
